The NHS Genomic Medicine Service (GMS) — Routine Whole Genome Sequencing
In 2026, the UK is the only national healthcare system in the world to offer Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) as a standard of care for specific patient groups. This service is delivered via seven regional Genomic Laboratory Hubs (GLHs).
Rare Disease: Any child with a suspected but undiagnosed genetic disorder is now automatically eligible for WGS, significantly reducing the "diagnostic odyssey" for thousands of families.
Cancer Care: WGS is routinely used to identify actionable mutations in solid tumors (such as lung, bowel, and breast cancer), allowing oncologists to prescribe "precision" therapies that target the specific genetic drivers of a patient’s tumor.
